The swine industry in America has become more efficient over the years as the animals have been concentrated in fewer, yet larger, facilities. As a result of this the concentration of swine waste has increased, leading to problems involving microbial activity. The waste is typically disposed of in lagoons and under these anaerobic conditions, many volatile compounds are produced. These compounds can be harmful to both the animals and the people surrounding the facilities. Identifying the organisms responsible for the production of these compounds will allow us to find a way to better manage these microorganisms.
